Ian
I've just broken a window. When I get round to replacing it (not before springtime), there must be something better than putty to use - this is the 21st century after all.Any hints? Thanks
woolybanana
Gaffer tape?
andyh4
The local carpenters all use silicone to hold the windows in place and make them draught proof and then finish off with hard wood beading where the visible putty would be. For security reasons the bead is usually on the inside of the window rather than the outside.
dave21478
Most of the DIY places have Mastic Vitrage in tubes for a normal sealant gun.https://www.leroymerlin.fr/v3/p/produits/mastic-de-vitrier-blanc-300-ml-e1500204237Im not convinced it isnt just silicone sealant. Ian
At the moment, it's gaffer tape that's holding the broken glass/cardboard in place. Tomorrow, I'll use a piece of ply or something to give me a few months of draught free existence. But that's just kicking the can down the road (consultant speak...).Come spring, I can't use wood beading (on the outside) - wouldn't match the old putty on the other panes.??Cheers
BritinBretagne
If you want it to match putty wouldn’t it be a good idea to use putty?
Théière
Ian, are they held in with a bead or the old full fillet putty? Not seen linseed putty used in france, ours are the old two pack mix that was only in fashion for a while in the UK because it's a devil to get out and usually shrinks a tiny bit leaving rattling glass. Now you'll have to google for anti pick glazing sealant like this one, Everbuild is Sikka so you should find something. Don't forget you won't be able to paint silicon.https://www.sealantsandtoolsdirect.co.uk/silicones_and_sealants/tecnic_professional_sealants/swimming_pool_and_anti_pick_sealants/everbuild_tecnic_antipick_109_sealant_300ml_white_grey_soft_linen_P23009.html
Ian
Thanks, folks.I was hoping for something a bit more modern than linseed putty, but looking around, it seems the only alternatives are silicon-based. Which are out, as I need to paint it to match.Looks like it's putty again. So be it.
Théière
Ian, did you look at my link and suggested search? They are polymer polyurethane that can be painted and won't pick out. I had to use these a lot on my jobs. Just wasn't clear on which products may be available in France
Ian
I did, but I got the impression it was paintable (perhaps) with (some) paints. Also difficult to find in France. What do you think of these?https://www.screwfix.com/p/nemesis-mighty-frame-glazing-sealant-black-290ml/3534jorhttps://www.repair-care.co.uk/products/dry-seal-mpBoth are readily available (Dry Seal via Amazon)Cheers
Chancer
Mastic vitrier (à l'huile de lin) available in all bricos. Chack the date code to make sure it has not sat there for décades.

Tom 58
There are different sorts of putty and this one is outstandingly good... make absolutely sure you get the white one.https://www.toupret.com/enduit-professionnels/enduit-specialisees/mastic-blanc-lsmabla05.html
