Mpprh
This week I phoned the non resident tax office in Bootle. They confirmed I owed GBP 0.00.A normal situation for someone who left UK 15 years and has had no UK tax liability since, you may think ? Particularly someone who has notified them of changes in address etc. After a brief 3 year holiday (did they lose my file ?) I've had assessments, self assessment forms, interest charges, determinations, and penalties of varying amounts at different times. At one point they wanted GBP 5000 and passed it to a recovery unit who said it would be recovered through the French system. The small print says penalties can not exceed the tax due, so if you owe 0 you don't have to worry. And it is reassuring to know that if you don't live in UK, have no property in UK, have no investments in UK and have no income in UK, ( and some years don't even visit UK) you have escaped the UK taxman.Or nearly. I was told "you have been put on a semi dormant level, so your next tax return won't be until 2007" !Peter
