Minimum Income Requirement

Please can someone tell if there is a minimum income requirement (officially) to live in France or to becoming a permanent resident.  I have heard mention of an amount of 12,000 but don't whether this is sterling or euro or as a french citizen.

When there was a requirement for anybody moving to France from another country to obtain titre de sejour it was necessary to demonstrate that you could support yourself, and had made provision for medical cover etc. For most European citizens this requirement no longer applies, though it is still in force for other immigrants.

Although I do not know of any official figure, and as with so much in France requirements and the way they were interpreted differed greatly from place to place, a lot of sources seemed to quote a figure of 8,000€.
