Benjamin
We have yet to pay either tax as we purchased our house in March of this year, but surely if you purchased in July (of 2005?) why are you paying either? The most you should be paying is a proportion of the taxe fonciere. Benjamin

Teamedup
From the beginning, on the 1st of January, the person who is in the property has to pay the Taxe d'Habitation for that year. The person who owns the place on the 1st of January has to pay the Taxe Fonciere for that year. No one else owes this money. That person(s) owe the taxe officials. However, when selling and buying it is 'usual' for the purchaser to pay the seller from the date they take over the property. The notaire will often sort this out and it should be noted in the agreements that this is going to happen. The payments are usually worked out in the number of days left for the year. And as I said the bills are issued in autumn for that year. Although the notaires would be able to make this calculation in say July and get the buyer to pay for the number of days left that year.
