Owens88
Hi beakThe rates are quoted on the EDF web site. My property is in 66 and I wasn't aware that costs differed by region.

Gyn_Paul
Some regions vary in the placement of the hours Heures Creuse, - probably dependant on the amount of industrial use there is. In Loire-Atlantique (44), for example, there is a single period 23h30 - 07h30. Whereas here in La Creuse (23) we have 5 hours over-night + 2 hours in the afternoon (you can chose various combinations of start/finish time). I don't think the actual cost per unit is too bad over here..... it's only when you add the local tax on top of the abonnement and then the bloody TVA on top of that... that's when you wince !p
Logan
In addition to the TVA at 19.6% for consumption, the standing charges (abonnement) plus TVA at 5.5% there is under autres prestations " contribution au service public d'electricite." This charge is yet another tax and is calculated as a percentage of your consumption.State owned EDF are a law unto themselves. The consumer will not get a fair deal in France until EDF is deregulated and competition is allowed. That will not happen until the present government changes and even then I would not hold your breath.

But tell me, in deregulated Britain, is electricity so much cheaper?
cheminot
I am on 'heures creuses' in my french house and with Atlantic electricity in the UK. I find that the cost per unit of electricity is almost identical between heures creuses peak time and Atlantic. The hc off-peak is thus cheaper than my uk supplier. The main difference is in the standing charges which are far higher with edf than with Atlantic.Overall though, with judicious use of energy hungry appliances in France ( I have fitted timeswitches to washing mc and dishwasher etc) I believe that in my case at least the difference is negligable.Cheminot

However you need the time and inclination to work it all out. There has been some publicity recently that EDF who own some of the electricity companies are actually contributing to higher energy costs in UK. How that is true I have no idea but the French inclination to 'fix' and 'control' markets does not suprise me.
Teamedup
Not everyone is with the EDF, some places get their electricity from a local Regie and the prices can vary because of this.
Quillan
I did some comparisons against the UK using EDF and Power Gen figures from the web. French electricity is more expensive because there is a standing charge unlike the UK where there is non and if you want the bigest size supply which I believe is currently 60A (as opposed to 100A in the UK and I am talking normal single phase) it gets really expencive. It must still be here somwhere but I can't find it
