Ron Avery
The previous poster is right, essential DDs are set up free of charge by most banks, but I got charged by CA to set up a DD for my mobile phone, I complained and was told that DDs with utilities etc are free but not for mobile phones. booboo
I suppose it depends on the CA region, as in Paris, they don't charge for any direct debits. Perhaps because of the competitiveness (is it spelt like that? !!) between paris banks??
chirpy
BANK POPULAIRE state no charges for d.d. for utilities, impot, habitation and fonciere but for each other one they charge-in my case it was for an interest -free payment over10 months for a new tv set .and if you are paying to another bank they will charge-so be warned. Afy
Bank Populaire sucks.... I would reccomend moving your account to any other institiution. It has to be better than the crappy service they provide.
Missy
Never mind about charging when setting a Direct Debit up, I know that Société Générale charge 10.87€uros + 2.13€uros TVA for when you want/need to stop a Direct Debit!....
Cassis
We have never been charged for direct debits by BNP. This includes our ISP as well as our insurances, FT and electricity payments
Too general...Any one of us could slag off a banks name all over France.Just as in most things, banks are best judged by its individual branch. We have had business acounts with 4 different branches of fourdifferent banks. All gave us a few problems over the years. We are now with BPO here in Brittany. They will also try it on now andagain. A few months ago we received our "solde" and lo and behold wehad 6 euros stopped for no apparent reason. One call to my conseillorasking as to what the deduction was for ? He said it is now policy tohave a quarterly charge for running and looking after an account. AllI said in reply was, OK, tomorrow I will come in and take the lot outof our private and business accounts and put the telephone down. Ongoing down there in the morning, I was ushered in to the boss's officewhere it was explained that everybody was due this charge. I simplyre-iterated that no way was I being charged to leave healthy balancesin their bank and would now find it all a new home. Five more minutes offurther discussions meant no charges and none foreseen and if they did,he could be sure our account would be closed down.It might not work for all but it has for us and not only with BPO either. Cassis
Miki, are you trying to deny our friends the banks from making an honest crust?I have to duck down now as Jude was a bank manager before we left the UK!

Will
I have to duck down now as Jude was a bank manager before we left the UK!
My Judie (aka Mrs Will) worked for the Inland Revenue before leaving Britain, and now works for an estate agent in France. No wonder I try to keep her way from these forums in consideration for her blood pressure...This is just another example of the way that the French banks, like the tax people, will always get you. The charges I particularly like are those for having an inactive account. OK, you close the account to avoid those charges - but there are even bigger charges for closing accounts. Will
Well, blige me as our old friend would say. French banking takes a further small step into the twentieth century - that's good.It still seems wrong somehow that they should charge you for using your account in anything more than the most basic way, yet if you choose not to operate it you get a further charge for not using it. Oh well, that's France. (oh, sorry, we aren't supposed to say that)
Miki
We had a charge for not banking with a little bank in the Doo Don. Whenasked what the charge was for, the Manager quite calmly told us it wasfor none use...it got scrubbed but that, as Will says, has to be thestrangest bank charge ever thought up !Whenever we closed accounts, we did, on a couple of occasions, as we were told by an ex Manager, that is totake it all out, either by way of cash or by a cheque paid in to a newaccount elsewhere. When it is cleared, simply close the account ! Yes Ihad heard that any closure charges were now annuled.Neatly put Will, about you know what but he has packed it in, does that mean we can mention it now [;-)]
