Banque Unpopulaire...

I have my salary account with them, have never been in the red, and mantain a healthy balance. My debit card expired this month and they have "refused" to issue another one... because I spend more than a few thousand a month. It is quite frankly none of their business how much I spend or dont spend. I do not borrow any money, and they charge me to bank my money... so what on earth is their problem. I did loose my cool with the dolt of a manager.

I travel a lot, and luckily have an Amex linked to to the account so will be able to pay hotel bills et al using that. However what am I supposed to do for establishments that do not accept Amex, or in need for cash?

I think Banque Unpopulaire just lost my account...

The banks all rely on you not switching your account because the process of opening an account at any other bank is so mind-numbing.

When opening our account I was asked about the source of my funds - they seemed fine when I said that I was getting out of arms dealing and into white slaving. I think that they were worried about drug money laundering.

I think the way in which debit cards in France are restricted is just stupid.  Our debit card was refused when buying furniture which was incredibly embarrassing - not because we had insufficient funds in the account (we had 20,000 euro in there!)  but because we had spent more than 1,000 euro that week!! We have the money, its ours, we earned it and we want to spend it - what's their problem!!  It can't be because of security because they suggested we use a cheque instead - which is about the most unsecure form of payment possible.

Banking from the middle ages......

PS we bank with Banque Populaire too and are thinking of changing.  They don't answer mail, give us incorrect information (gave us completely duff info regarding the building insurance we had with them when we needed  to claim - which resulted in wasted time and unnecessary phone calls on our part.  We got the impression they couldn't be bothered to look up the correct info). Our notaire's were constantly having to chase them for info needed to the house purchase....

I had my CB refused when buying something expensive shortly after first moving here. Not embarrassing as the people in the shop explained about max. per week type levels, etc.. However, always did intend to open an account with a local bank (as I never like relying on having a single card that can "stop working"). When I then opened my 2nd account (actually the one I use all the time), I asked about these limits. I was told that there are no real limits but that if there is any question when the card is used, the shop is asked to call rather than the card being just declined.

If they are refusing to issue you with another card then I would think you have little choice but to move to a new bank.

Maybe move to two new banks and get two cards. It obviously costs a bit more as you are paying twice, but if there is a problem with one then you have a 2nd card. When I opened my 2nd (main) account I told them I already had an account with a different bank and it did not bother them at all.
