Delayed BACS payments 30 March

Sorry this is not to do with French banking but it may reassure anyone who got caught out by yesterday's c*ck-up.

Welcome to Barclays Online Banking

Problems with the BACS/Voca payments

There has been an issue with the processing of a small number of

payments, mainly salaries. This may mean that some Barclays customers

who were expecting a payment into their account on Friday 30 March may

not receive it. All payments will have been made by Monday 2 April at

the latest. This issue has affected most banks and we, and the industry

as a whole, are sorry for what has happened.

Our priority is to do everything that we can to assist our customers

who have a problem because of this incident. Barclays customers will be

able to access cash via ATMs or debit cards on Saturday 31 March and

Sunday 1 April and in Barclays branches on Saturday 31 March (during

normal Saturday opening hours) even though their account will not be

credited until Monday 2 April.

We will, of course recompense customers who incur costs as a result of this issue.

I'm normally a vociferous critic of banks but on this occassion they're holding their hands up.

Probably because they will be seeking (re) compensation from BACS, so given their current scale of fees they have probably earned £30 already for sending you the E-mail!

I read it was around 400000 payments delayed. To me this sounds like a lot but I have no idea how many normally go through in a day. It is interesting that these things can happen I I tend to use BACS when paying for currency (i.e. when I buy €s) - mainly because I can authorise a BACS transfer over the telephone but a SWIFT (or whatever the faster one is) need written authorisation (by my bank from me).

From what I have been told the BACS system is now very old and current technology your "leave it standing" (performance/cost/etc. wise. Assuming what I heard (from bank employees) was correct, maybe it is incidents like this that will drive a replacement.
