mint
Clair, did I read elsewhere on the forum that it is not possible to do a tax return on line in your first year because you would not have a tax reference number? If you have a little time to spare, can you describe (perhaps in some detail) how to get started? I have read SD's advice to someone else and I have assembled all the figures that I will need.Do I now just download the forms and try and work it out or would you advise me to pay a visit to the tax office?Thank you, Clair. I dare say I shall not be the only person awaiting your considered reply!
Clair
If it is your first declaration you cannot complete online, as you are not known to the tax office and your basic details will not exist. You can either request the forms from your local tax office or you can download them from the Impôts website when they become available (they are not available for download at the moment). In your shoes, I would visit the tax office and ensure I have all the relevant forms for my situation.Next year, you will be able to declare online and if you also opt to pay online or by DD, you will benefit from a one-off reduction (€20 in 2008). mint
Thanks for the advice, Clair. I will do what you suggest even if it means facing Dragon Lady (again). I was warned about her but, in fact, she was OK, matter-of-fact and not exactly warm but OK nonetheless. The last time we met, I'd gone to ask for a bill for our taxe fonciere way back in about October and the bill has only just arrived! We had some worries about how our house transaction was being carried out as the Brit we bought it from had "done a bunk" and gone back to the UK, leaving debts and taxes unpaid! If I asked nicely, she might even help me fill in the forms though I think that if I really applied myself, I should be able to complete them myself. Clair
Nearer the time, you might be able to go to a "declaration clinic" (usually held in the office of the Trésor Public), when they assist you with completing the forms.Bear in mind though that they are not necessarily familiar with all the nuances concerning investment income or pensions from outside France, as they differ somewhat from French ones.
