Julie Clare
Hello, What is the general concensus on where to pay income tax. Myself and OH are due to come out and live in about a years time . Now that Mr Brown has done away with the 10% lower tax bracket, the remainder of our meagre pension pot might stretch further under the French tax system looking at some of the post in this forum. We will both be 61 when we come over, I will have my O A pension plus we both have small occupational pensions, totalling about £13000 per year. What would be our best option? Thanks in advance for any info ![8-)]
Bob T
Probably France for that amount, but someone with more knowledge will be along soon. You don't have a choice in where you pay tax as that is determined by residency rules.
Ron Avery
Bob's second paragraph is correct. From HMRC"In order to receive payments of your UK pension without deduction of UK tax, please complete form France/Individual (available from: www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk/cnr/form_france.htm) and send it to your local French tax office for certification and forwarding to this office.I would advise that your do NOT have a choice in the country to which you must pay tax. You will be liable to tax in your country of residence, and failure to apply for exemption from UK tax may result in your being liable in both countries."Look here also http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/cnr/faqs_general.htm#15nr
Sunday Driver
Please read the French Tax FAQ which explains the tax arrangements in France for persons receiving UK pensions.Note that if your combined pension income is less than 19,000€ you will pay no tax in France.
