Lehaut
Came across this article written recently by two Americans who are trying to make their life in France. Amongst the many strange comments in the article was the one about the terrible state of the vegetables on offer, compared to the photograph (taken by the author of the article) which clearly illustrated the opposite. Its almost as if they are trying (unsuccessfully in my view) reasons to disparage life in France as an excuse to return to the USA. https://www.cnn.com/travel/us-couple-dream-life-france-became-nightmare/index.html
DaveLister
I honestly wish I hadn't read that article. It's done nothing for my blood pressure. FFS, France would be fine if it was only more like America and everyone spoke English. F off back to your rent controlled apartment in San Francisco you dozy b*tch.
Le martin-pêcheur
Yes, the three "R"s again. Research, research and research!!! Not done! Typical attitude of some people who want the universe moving an inch to the left to accommodate them. Be glad to see them go frankly.
NormanH
We are being invaded by Americans here after our journalist Maire placed an article in Sloan magazine saying how wonderful Béziers is! They have solved the problems in the article by forming a ghetto group (and a Facebook page) where they organise a French-free social life. I made a couple of comments about American-style food and coffee chains and was banned for "Anti American HATE speech"... and you all know how moderate I am😂 1
DaveLister
To be fair Norman, the Brits are accused of doing the same. However, I was in Canada earlier in the year and I was surprised at just how uptight American tourists are. The ones I met were so nervous on every level you would think they were visiting a war zone. I joined a couple of coach tours, one in Toronto and one in Vancouver, and both times the group ended up being split into the Americans and 'the others'. Whilst the Europeans and Australians were happy just to go with the flow and embrace the experience the Americans required everything to be spelt out, in advance, and heaven help anyone else who didn't 'follow the rules'. At the end of the day the Americans all went straight back to their respective hotels whilst the rest of us ended up in a pub.😃 If they can get that stressed out in a country that's their close neighbour and speaks the same language, how on earth do they manage when they go further afield. menthe
I admit I have only just read the article. Apologies, Lehaut, I simply didn't think I'd be interested. In fact, I found a lot that was astounding and how narrow-minded, stuck-in-the-mud these two Americans were! And they are not your red-necked hillbillies either; they have travelled widely and lived in different places! How have they managed to be so naive and uncomprending of their experience of life in France? My mind is boggled and I am unable to find the words to comment on this. NormanH
Think yourself lucky you aren't invaded by them AND the English who call themselves 'Ex-PATS' of which there were none here 20 years ago, but now they are swarming over us. I suppose Spain must be full.
betise
Sacre bleu! Watch an episode of Emily in Paris, move to a country where you don't speak the language but spend soooo much time unpacking and assembling furniture that you simply don't have the will to learn, give it less than a year, and then enough is enough! And the natives aren't even friendly. If you give something 10%, that's what you get back. France may not be for everyone, but I'd take that over the good ol' US of A any day.
alittlebitfrench
This article has being doing the rounds. Everyone has an opinion. France is not Emilly in Paris…..lavander fields…good food and fine wine. We all know that France is a drug ridden, violent nightmare with bad food….and high taxes to count. If an alien landed in France they would think that that French food consited of Sushi, Kabab….or a pizza out of a wall. Dropping celery…yeah I get that. Give them a break. They fell for the France worldwide marketing thing. They are half right. The French fall for it as well. Some just don’t want to admit it. DaveLister
1 hour ago, alittlebitfrench said: Give them a break. They fell for the France worldwide marketing thing Rubbish!! Their first choice was London but they found the cost of living too high. I suppose that's the fault of UK 'worldwide marketing'. They made money flipping properties in the states and thought they could retire in style to Europe without having to make a single effort to integrate. Reality would simply bend around them. I have zero sympathy ( except for the poor cat ).

menthe
Lehaut, not completely along the lines of your video, which incidentally I find informative and enjoyable to watch, but here is an article that could provide food for thought. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/nov/13/americans-googling-move-to-europe-welcome-them-brain-drain
Lehaut
Ah, menthe you beat me to it, read it yesterday, it is interesting. Ironic in a way if they leave the New World to come back to the Old.
