Vat on UK letting agent fees

I have recently started letting out a property in the UK and have just been filling out the appropriate bits on the 2009 French tax declaration.  It struck me that although I pay no UK tax (income being below the personal allowance), I am charged VAT on all the letting agents' fees and all repairs etc.  As an overseas resident, should I be paying this?  Or maybe at a reduced rate?  Just a thought.

Yes, you should be paying it. Your rental income is subject to UK tax, which includes VAT, even if you do not actually pay any tax there. As a European resident you cannot escape paying VAT, though if you had a French rental business (not a micro entreprise or autoentrepreneur) it might be possible to reclaim the VAT against your French TVA.
