JohnRoss
With reference to my earlier post about reducing the height of 114 large fir trees around our property http://www.completefrance.com/cs/forums/2504899/ShowPost.aspx we have had a devis to do this work from a small firm EURL J. Bossuet with a total cost of 6857,50 euros. The bloke proposed leaving all the branches and trunks removed in our field for burning in November as to remove them would significantly increase the cost. Others have said that the trunk wood when dry and spilt could be used in our wood burner without risk which is something I must investigate further. Mind you that is more than our anticipated income tax anyway so what is the significance of Société Agrée Services à La Personne? ................JRPS We have another devis coming next week for the same work from a much larger firm but including removing the cut timber so it will be interesting to compare with this one! JohnRoss
Many thanks for that and will study it carefully. Meantime is there anything we should look for or ask about to ensure we will not be held in anyway liable should he have or cause an accident with damage to anyone or their property including our property and that of our neighbour and the power lines/ telephone lines that run along side the edge of our property and the road?.....JR
Mikep
Pine is pretty useles for burning - it gives out very little heat and will fill your chimney with tar, which is a fire risk. Better get rid now!.
JohnRoss
From my other post. "Several sites, mostly American, suggest pine and fir should never be used as firewood indoors. Others, like this one http://www.mastersweep.com/wood.htm , suggest that in fact tests have shown that hardwoods like oak can generate more creosote than fir." There are many folk who think wood like this is the spawn of the devil any many who do not. Difficult to know what the truth of the matter is..........JR
Clair
I wouldn't burn it in an open fireplace, as I would be worried about the sparks waiting for me to leave the room before jumping on the furniture or the floor and setting the house on fire! [:P]We do burn the occasional, very dry, split log of pine; it does get a fire started quickly but burns out just as quickly.
JohnRoss
Ok but we have a Supra wood burning stove so only the possibility of creosote is of concern and several sites would have you believe that is only when the wood is not dry or seasoned..........JRPS Don't like the tiny message box and lack of extra things like bold buttons etc that we get now when writing messages to be posted or is it only me? No-one seems to advise against burning properly dried seasoned pine, especially in a closed fire, depending on which pine it is, in my book it's firewood especially after that cost! JohnRoss
Ok well I don't normally use IE but the technique described solves the problem so thanks for that. Don't have the ability to do that when using my usual AOL browser. The implication of the information that comes up when sliding the cursor over the paper tear symbol is that Complete France site is not designed for modern browsers and I recently upgraded to AOL 9.6, AOL 9.1 did not give this problem. As far as burning fir tree wood goes I guess that it is worth a try after seasoning for a couple of years and I hope the chemical logs or crystals do what it says on the tin as it were!.............................JRPS I always sweep the conduit at the beginning of the season and again just after Christmas with a chemical log a week before, hope that is good enough.
