As is often mentioned on this forum, most of us are in a privileged/stable position financially compared to many in France.  I have taken to giving changed to some of those who are less fortunate outside of supermarkets etc, but I do prefer to buy food.

We had to admire the front of a "lady of the road" yesterday outside a Carrefour Express.  We were just going in and she walked straight up and politely asked for grated cheese please.  So we bought some and dropped it in her bag on the way out, noticing she already had the pasta!

That seems a good idea. Next time we visit Lidl I'll try to remember to ask the guy who hangs around outside shouting "Bonjour" if he would like us to buy something for him.
