Cat
Hi HazelThere's been a fair bit of stuff on the french news in the last few days showing eager-beavers snapping up bargains in places like Jersey and Monaco, where the sales have already started. I'm pretty sure that they also said that the sales in France don't start until the 11th January.
Teamedup
Check on www.service-public.fr and there will be all the information about where they start and finish on there. Try asking 'soldes'.
Tourangelle
It is 11th January everywhere this year all over France, such coherencemakes a nice change, but the dates of the end are different accordingto the departement, this is according to Europe 1[:)]

Blanche Neige
" I also checked the web site 'Teamed Up' suggested "me too.............and it looks as though in the Charente-Maritime 17 they end on 21 February, so when we go to check on our building / renovation work I might just catch the end of the sales.[:)]
Teamedup
I love the service-public web site. It is a gold mine of information about most aspects of living France. And has very good links too.
Dotty0
Happy new year Can anyone tell me how genuine the January sales are in France. I have lived here for 6 months, so have no experience of the said sales. I am about to make some furniture purchases (new) am I likely to make a saving if I wait 'till the 11th.Many thanksDotty
Teamedup
I would say that there are genuine sales. If you are looking for furniture why don't you start looking around and checking prices and then see if these goods are on sale during the sale period and if the prices are reduced. We bought a leather suite from a good shop a few years ago that was genuinely half price. A friend did complain that she thought that Carrefour had things in the sales last year that she hadn't seen before, therefore implying that they had brought in specific items just for the sales. Mochas
Can anyone please explain how it is that all the sales start on 11 Jan?Is there some sort of national edict or trade agreement behind this? Itpuzzles me that individual shops don't simply arrange their own salesdates to suit themselves according to their view of commercialpressures and maybe to steal a march on their competitors. Loiseau
Is there some sort of national edict or trade agreement behind this?
Yes, is the short answer.See this paragraph from the FAQ on TU's "Service Public" websiteQuelle est la durée des soldes ? Les soldes ont une période déterminée (deux fois par an) et une durée limitée de six semaines chacune maximum. Les dates de ces périodes sont fixées dans chaque département par les préfets après consultation des professionnels, mais elles peuvent être harmonisées au plan national. Tourangelle
yes, they are not allowed to have sales outside the official times, butyou will see "promotions", which in reality can be sales (although notalways, sometimes it is a promotion!) or some formulation on "les Xjours de (name of the shop)" where they have reductions which again aresimilar to sales. In France there aren't sales on absolutelyeverything the way there is in the UK, it really is a way of gettingrid of old stock and as such I would say they are real sales, withbargains to be had. However they are very progressive, 1 demarqueat the beginning, say 25%, 2 demarque - often after about a week, andthen 3 demarque, it can be worth waiting, or just going at the end, myhusband got a fantastic coat from 200 down to 40 last year, butthen again it was the last one and he is extra large[:)]
