Hi John

We are not near you, but someone else may be. We have settled on a supplier after a couple of not quite successful try outs with other people recommended by our neighbours. If  no one here comes up with a supplier near you you could start this way.

This year we paid 32E per cm2 for Oak, delivered but not stacked. If you need/want the wood cutting to whatever size your fire takes that also costs more.

I'm sure other people get it cheaper but we were happy as the wood is fantastic. Last year we paid a lot less (23E) but the wood was difficult to cut, as it was logs of huge diameter, and they didn't seem to heat as well (except overnight, when the fire stayed in without fail).

This year the wood we bought was already quartered - much easier to cut/stack and manage generally, and we still have plenty of the big logs for overnight.

For well seasoned, 50cm lengths of oak, ash, beech, and copice elm

(chêne, frêne, hêtre & orme), I would expect to pay between 50€ and

€60 per stère (1 stère being 1 cubic meter) delivered for, say, a

quantity of 5 stère. I would expect to pay somewhat less for green

wood, longer lengths, large amounts (particularly had I been helping

the seller with his vines!), or for less suitable firewood (eg,

chestnut or birch), or for sawmill off-cuts (which can be a real

bargin).

Beware of types in sharp suits trying to flog you lumps of  poplar

under the heading of firewood - it is just about the worst wood for

burning: difficult to light, with a cool flame and lots of ash. Also,

and I apologise if this sounds in any way patronising, check that you

actually get what you are paying for - it is not unknown for short

loads to be delivered. Indeed, some people accept this as being a

hidden cost in buying "cheap" supplies of wood.

It is very hard to get a true measure of logs when they are delivered, our neighbour told us a good way not 100% true but it is pretty near, cross the logs a bit like building a wall up to a metre high and and work the "wall" out ie 3steer is 3m by 1m etc, much easier with 50cm lenghts.
