Ysatis
Has anybody met the Mairie in Savigné, near Civray. We bought a plot of land near there back in September and I'm plucking up the courage to meet him when we go to France in June. I'm petrified!!Regards,
chris pp
Liz, No need to be petrified, just another human being, an elected local at that, you'll be polite, he'll be polite, just don't mention my name!!!Chris
Dick Smith
And quite likely it will be the maire's secretary (the mairie is the building, be careful of that) who will know everything and actually do the work!
chris pp
She's OK as well. I don't actually live in that commune but I have to deal with them from time to time. It really will be OK they are used to dealing with Brits, Dutch, Belgians, Swedes and the occasional German. It's getting quite multi-cultural round these parts.Chris
Ysatis
Yes of course, 'maire' and 'mairie'. I knew that, just a lapse in concentration
Ysatis
Yes of course, 'maire' and 'mairie'. I knew that [:$], just a lapse in concentration. I assume I see the maire nearest to me (geographically).
Dick Smith
You see the maire of your commune or village. It may not be the nearest geographically. Ours isn't.
Ysatis
I've done my checking and it is Savigné. I'm going to e-mail the office to make an appointment. Not that I intend to speak in English (going to put my new GCSE in French to practice) but are they, Maire's in general, likely to speak some English just incase my limited French is not good enough. Ysatis
I now have an appointment to meet the maire, any do's or don'ts?Little nervous now, husband isn't but he won't be doing the talking!!
Tourangelle
I guess a "do" would be to assume that s/he doesn't speak any English, so be well prepared to speak French, have a few basic phrases ready.
Ysatis
I am going to speak French, my French isn't too good, but I will give my best shot. I have great conversations with myself but I get panicky and clam up when I actually open my mouth, no problems with general chit chat so I'll ease myself in gently with that.Regards,
