ebaynut
Hi,We have been looking at aeriel photos of the Charente on Mappy, and have noticed something we cannot find an explanation for, can someone enlighten us please. There is a rather strange, but perfectly circular area in the bends of the R. Charente, Southeast of Ruffec, between Barro & Vertueil-Sur-Charente, with no mention of what it is. It is larger than both of the neighbouring communes.Any ideas, it's driving us nuts?[8-)]

ebaynut
Hi Coops,Yup, problem is I don't know how to shorten links, and it is verrrrry long![:-))]Anyhows, here goes, hope you can get it.http://www7.mappy.com/link shortened by a mod
sid
Hi ebaynutThe link wouldn't work for me, and I think its length has caused a display problem for this thread (I can't see the full page without scrolling to the right/left).Never mind, I've had a look on the Geoportail site and found the circle; I think it's probably a field of mais (maize) which relies heavily on being watered. In this case the water is supplied by a radial arm which rotates around the centre of the circle. I've seen other examples in the area.Sid
Clair
The link (long or short) takes you to Mappy's home page....
Cat
I found it using Google maps. Whilst trying to find out more about it I came across this http://www.davidrumsey.com/detail?id=1-1-28556-1120444&name=La+Charente. Whatever it is now, in 1827 it was a park. Looks a bit like one of those rotating arms at a (albeit large) station d'epuration. If on geoportail you overlay the mapon the picture it is marked as "les long sillons" - long furrows?? ebaynut
I knew that we would get a perfectly logical explanaion for it, but it had us foxed.Thank you everyone, much obliged, and thanks to Clair for sorting out my dreadful attempt at a link![:$]Julia
Will
The link (long or short) takes you to Mappy's home page....
No it doesn't, it takes you to a page that tells you your session has expired. Cat
Not sure what you're aiming at Will? The original link was too long, and didn't work.
ebaynut
Can you give us lat and long if you aren't allowed to post a working link?
I haven't got a clue how to find that out, [8-)] (not very tech I'm afraid!), [:$], but if you search for Ruffec in the Charente, it is a few km's southeast, between Barro & Vertueil Sur Charente. (Then zoom in a bit, very obvious then, even from up high!)
Cat
Or, easier to search on Verteuil-Sur-Charente, and then look just a little higher, just below Barro. EDIT: whoops, crossed posts.
Will says "it takes you to a page that tells you your session has expired", Cat."It" being Clair's link, i.e. the link of Clair does not work. So if you click on it it does nothing useful. Here are the pics in question:Looks pretty obvious, it's an intergalactic tiddley-wink. Bob T
If you look at Google Earth, you can just see what look like original field boundaries within the circle.

Hoddy
Sorry ErnieY, it doesn't. It just gives you the page expired mesage.I've looked on Mappy and Googlearth and I reckon it's an old 78 with a broken stylus arm.Hoddy
ebaynut
You've got to admit, it is a bit odd to say the least!I like Cassis & Hoddy's ideas......... anyone else got any ideas? When I have looked at it on Geoportail, you can zoom right in, and at about 7-8 o'clock on the outskirts of the circle, there is another strange area, like a beach with people on it?Should I be thinking about getting my medication checked out?[blink]Julia
sid
JuliaIt's what I said it is; a field of crops with a radial watering system! [8-|] If you zoom in you can see further concentric circles made by the wheels which support the arm of the water 'sprinkler' system.Like this example... http://tinyurl.com/2vn4znSid

Step 1. find the link and copy it (for example http://www.completefrance.com/cs/forums/465569/ShowPost.aspx )Step 2. start or reply to a post on the forumStep 3. type a short name for the link (in this example Forum Code of Conduct)Step 4. use your cursor to highlight the name you have given the link (in this example, highlight Forum Code of ConductStep 5. hit the "Create Link" button at the top RHS of the post you are making (it's the one that has a globe and chain icon)Step 6 paste the URL (link) that you copied into the URL field You then have a short link, like this Forum Code of Conduct
