We used Currencies Direct when purchasing. We used them for the deposit and then for the balance I contacted a number of companies and also viewed the rates of a company that work on line. Their rate was the best. When I spoke to Currencies Direct their rate was lower than the highest which was the one on line. 'How does that seem and are you just researching or about to transfer'. I told them that at the right rate the transfer would be that day. 'Hold a minute please' and they came back with an excellent rate. 'We can tag yours on to a far larger transaction we are doing' he said that I did not believe.

For me the lesson was do not accept the first rate given and play one off against the other.

For regular transfers at a good rate and very low transfer charges we have found:

https://www.currencyfair.com/

excellent.  It is a peer-to-peer service and can be used for small or large amounts.  The only snag is that there is always a delay of 2 or 3 days in getting funds to them to exchange but that is not a problem if you plan ahead.

With Currency Fair you can practically choose your own rate. If you are in a hurry you can go with the 'flashing rate' on the exchange board and your money will be exchanged before your very eyes and then cost 3€ to transfer out to wherever. But if you are prepared to wait for a few minutes or a few hours you can opt for a 'better rate'. You choose a rate and post your option on the board. Sometime later someone will come along and snaffle your funds at your rate. You are sent an email when this happens.

All this sounds most odd until you try it. I was dubious but am now a huge fan as I just adore being able to do what I want when I want to.
Banque, guichet, numero de compte, cle rib...  Is it any of these ?
No, it's a separate code (either 8 or 11 characters) and I think it's usually labelled 'BIC' in French as well as English.

On my RIB, the next line after the codes you mentioned contains the IBAN (which is essentially the same series of code numbers again, but grouped differently) and then the BIC.  If these don't appear on your RIB then I wonder whether it is an old one, printed before the IBAN and BIC were generally adopted.  Your bank should give you up-to-date RIBs on request.

I used to use HIFX. Absolutely no problems with the service but they decided to start charging for the privilege of moving my money.

I then went to the Post Office FX service who don't charge but you get a slightly worse rate.

However due to the amount I change every month it works out better for me use the Post Office.

Register with both sites and then get an instant quote and you can work out what's better for you.

As I said it will all depend on the amount you are switching.

Note - The HIFX and Post Office sites are almost identical [:D]
