shropshirelass
Hi - we're totally new to the area and need to buy furniture for our new house. The house is in the Gers but our nearest large city is Toulouse. Can anyone recommend where to find all the large out of town shopping centres around Toulouse where we can buy furniture - hopefully some of it to take away with us?Many thanks
jxedwards
We have a house 2 hours north east of Toulouse in Lot near Figeac. We have used But (MFI French style) also is Mauntbaun closer to you? All stores are northside of the town and easy to find. A wise selection of them as well.Hope this helpsJohn
Hegs
There is a large Ikea just south of Toulouse on the N20 at Roques sur Garonne. http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/IkeaNearYouView?storeId=4&langId=-2&catalogId=10101&StoreName=toulouseNext town, maybe 2-3 kms from Roques and well signposted, is Portet sur Garonne with a very large commercial centre, the largest I have ever seen, where there are a lot of the standard large furniture shops amongst other things. I would take a look there as well.
shropshirelass
Wow - this is the first forum I've ever used after years of surfing on the net. I'm so impressed with the speed of the replies. Thank you so much for the information. I've found both Roque and Portets on the map with via Michelin so we'll check them both out. Thanks also to the suggestion about Montaubaun but we're not close to there - our house is in the north of the Gers near Condom and Eauze so Toulouse is marginally the nearest large centre.:
St Bernard
First of all, welcome to France. We live south of Toulouse about 45 minutes from Portet and Roques. If you are going to shop at IKEA, don't forget that you can also use the internet. We have friends who have ordered over the net and then collected at Toulouse. You don't want to get there and discover that the must-have article is out of stock. Portet is either a horror or retail delight depending on your mind-set - I love it. There are lots and lots of stores with furniture but finding places can be a challenge. Portet also features the largest Carrefour in the south-west if not south of the Loire and you may find things there. Whatever you do, avoid Portet on saturdays. However, depending on your taste and luck I would advise you to look in the depot-ventes in your area. If you're not familiar with them, they sell proerty on commission and you can find bargains especially if you have an older property with large/high rooms. A lot of the stuff there will be awful but from time to time you can find beautiful large pieces - wardrobes, sideboards, solid tables etc. at very attractive prices because they just won't fit into a modern property.Good luckJan
Hegs
>Portet also features the largest Carrefour in the south-west if not south of the Loire and you may find things there. I beg to differ... Carrefour Portet is the largest hypermarket in Europe ! http://www.klepierre.com/majic/pageServer/1a0303008d/en/PSG_portet_sur_garonne.html
shropshirelass
Thanks again for the info - we shall be heading for Portets as soon as we arrive and it won't be on a Saturday! We're looking for beds and sofas in the way of furniture and then all the electrical appliances, crockery, kitchenware and other essentials. I shall also look out for Depot de Vente's which sound ideal for looking for much of the furniture we need as we do indeed have very high ceilings and lots of space for very large furniture. Sadly Ikea have changed their policy about ordering on the internet and collecting from a store - we've just tried to do it and failed. They told us we had to order 15 days in advance which we did but then they came back with a 3 week delivery time - sadly too late for us to have a bed for our visit. St Bernard
Carrefour has a full range of electrical appliances and next door to it you'll find a big electrical store - Planete Saturne.
Richardbk
as already mentioned the area to the south follows the RN20. Basically just drive along this.there are literally hundreds of stores on this road between Roques via Portet to the Toulouse peripherique and a number of very large centre commercials. The large BUT furniture store is between Carrefour and the peripherique. On the South East there is also the area around Laberge, and to the east just of the peripherique on the D112, north of Balma is another large conglomeration of out of large out of town stores + a shopping centre based around Auchan.regsRichard
Iceni
Bought my cooker from Carrefour, a specialist (which we are paying for) is coming tomorrow to set it up properly - this was a very expensive cooker.Wanted to buy a cooker hood, I got shouted at by a man who informed me 'he was not a salesman' - well he certainly had no other job. I would not buy any further 'white goods' from them.
Lespearsons
From where you live I would think Agen is worth a look before going to Toulouse - except for Ikea of course! Keith
shropshirelass
Thanks for all the information. We have now bought quite a lot of our furniture having found the stores in Toulouse and Agen. Agen turned out to be quite good for much of what we wanted particularly on the electrical side and isn't such a trek as going to Toulouse. We did find Ikea in both Toulouse and Bordeaux and i have to say we'll always go to the store in Bordeaux in the future as it is enormous! Many thanks to you all.
