marc62
Could anybody recomend a senic picnic spot in the pyrnees? We are travelling down from the Vendee in late may with my elderly outlaws (inlaws) to stay for a couple of nights at a B&B in Buzy. We would like to take them up in the mountains but they are not able to walk any distance. We wanted to take them on the "Le Petit Train D'Artouste" but it opens a week later. Many thanks Marc (Apremont 85)

val douest
If you can beg, borrow or buy a copy of the guide book 'Gascony and thePyrenees' by Facaros and Pauls (in the Cadogan Guidebook series andcurrently available from Amazon.co.uk for £8.57 with a 24-hr turnround)I think you would find it an excellent investment. It is veryentertaining and informative - lots of suggestions for things to do andvisit, some of them quite original. For example, Maisond'Ossau in Arudy (which is the centre of the Pyrenean marble trade) isa restored 17C house which has exhibits on the nature, traditions andhistorical background of the area. Buzy isn't specifically mentionedbut it is is just down the road from Arudy. It is a shame aboutthe little train of Artouste not being open as it used to run all yearround. I know last year we had a picnic beside a lake, somewherenear the Lac de Fabrèges. I think it was probably the Lac deBious-Artgues, south west of Gabas; I remember it was reached by afairly decent road and there was a large car park and space for picnics(though I don't think there were any loos - worth stopping in Gabas orat the tourist development at Lac de Fabrèges beforehand, perhaps, ifyou have elderly passengers). If you carry on southfrom Gabas for a few miles you cross the border into Spain which looksremarkably like the bit of France you have just come from! However, ifyou want to stock up on things which are cheaper there (includingbooze, pottery and leather goods) you can drive on to one of the smalltowns nearby (I don't have a map of Spain handy so can't suggestspecifically where). At the time you are going, the Pyreneesshould be looking lovely with snow capped summits and lots of wildflowers - I hope you all have a great time!Val
