Gus0
Hi,I'm moving down to Nice shortly and wondered if anyone had any experience of the ski resorts in the southern Alps.I've seen Isola 2000 in some brochures and from an internet search have found a couple of others - Val d'Allos and Auron. Has anyone been to any of these and what are they like? Any recommendations on places to stay? Finally, is it easy to get to any of the Italian ski resorts from Nice?Ta
Nikv
I've been to Isola 2000 a few times now, both around Christmas, and later in the season (Feb). It is a decent resort with a variety of runs that should keep most people fairly happy for some time. The times I was there there was plenty of snow (Isola 2000 is as the name says at around 2000m at the base), although it can be a little wet due to the proximity to the sea and the amount of sun it receives.Xmas 2002 was excellent. It snowed all day on 26th, so the following few days the conditions were amazing. The only pity was that the guys who should've been grooming the runs were happier to sit indoors and let the skiers do the job. Northern Italians are a bit more efficient. We stayed in Nice and made a daily trip into the mountains. I wouldn't recommend it if you wanted to go there for a whole week though, as the road gets very busy especially on weekends.Nik.
Bw
HiI own and run a catered chalet in Le Seignus (part of the same area as La Foux/Pra Loup which is the biggest ski area in the southern Alps). We have a great snow record (season is from Dec. - Apr.), lots of sunshine and no lift queues (OK, in the school holidays there are queues but otherwise the slopes are empty). Ski hire and lift passes are noticeably cheaper than resorts in the northern Alps.Isola has a good snow record but is very ugly and can get busy. The amount of skiing probably isn't enough for a week's visit but if you're heading up for weekends it, or Auron, would be fine. You could see Nik's lazy pisteurs (sp.?) as being public-spirited by leaving lots of deep powder for everyone to enjoy. I'm sure that was their excuse!I've sent you a private message with more details in case you'd like a chalet holidayBen
