We have over the years stayed many times at the Hotel St Pierre Begude near to Pont du Gard and Uzes.

This year and ahead of booking for next year the hotel information says that for security and related matters that there is now an electric gate and a dog handler at night and for your security!

We live in (50) and the last crime here (in our village) was 15 years ago and when a farmer fell off his tractor and due to too much calva at lunchtime.

Is crime now such a problem in the south?

One reads a lot but the true test comes from those who live in the region.

Uzes and the immediately surrounding area has some very fancy property and one or two hotels to go with it. Presents an opportunity for the bad guys.

You can never speak too soon, but generally, this isn't an area where the Gendarmerie are overly-taxed. The boys came ripping in to our local village the other morning, piled headlong out of their clapped-out 406, and straight in to the boulangerie for 6x pains au raisins and 6x pains au chocolats. De-stocked the place.

There's always a bit of burglary going on anywhere in France and here's no exception. The 'smart' hotels need to provide sensible protection for their guests and I would see it as just that. My view: see it as a positive rather than a negative.

We too have now arrived at the same conclusion and thanks for your help.  It is of course the case that if you let perceived threats interfere with your life you would never go outside one's door.  However perhaps it is Normandie and yes big problems in Cherbourg Caen and Le Havre but fortunately not here so one becomes a little sensitive when faced with problems.  Thanks again
