Picnic areas near Carcassonne

We are coming from the Toulouse area to Carcassonne and fancy finding

somewhere to picnic not too far from la cité, does anyone have any nice

places to recommend ?  We don't want to be too near the road due

to our small children who would probably appreciate being able to run

around a little.  Thanks in advance

Try Carcassonne Plage as it's been named - Lac de la Cavayere, just behind la Cite off the rocade - head for Montlegun and you'll find it.

Alternatively go up behind the hospital on the rocade and there's a road continuing on, turn left off the road onto a track along the vines, down there is a field overlooking the autoroute with a fantastic view of La Cite

It is quite nice to picnic by the river Aude - which is at the foot of the Cite.  There are trees for shade and plenty of space for the children to run around.
