Brest - what to see. Val? Anyone?

Recommended Posts

Some friends are flying into Brest airport and will be going into town to catch the train.  What is worth seeing?  Anywhere nice for lunch?  If not, they will book an earlier train!

It will be April.

Thanks for any info.  I have only been to the aquarium....

Brest is a city based on a grid system of streets etc and yes, a lot to see but in April not the sea festival. Access to the Arsenal and shipyards is to french nationals only with production of an ID card. We always hit the shops especially C&A for underwear and the FNAC for music, books etc and specialist shops. Restaurants and bistros are numerous in the rue de Siam along with the usual fast foods but it can be pricey especially non-formula menus. There is the Chateau by Recouvrance to visit and the dock area but you need a car. Your friends will be limited if they are travelling by train as the station is quite a step from the main shopping area and especially if they have luggage to carry as well. Oceanopolis is the biggest attraction but again a long way from the station and in April may have restricted opening hours. Basically I think they might just enjoy strolling round the numerous back streets and seeing all the little tiny shops there are or visiting the open space with the water jets coming up out the tiles in front of the Hotel de Ville. Warn them to take a map though as they could get lost easily. You could look at the Brest site before they arrive and see if anything is advertised for the city centre inthe way of expos or festivals as well.

From the station to rue siam /jean jaures not more then 750metres to get there you pass numerous restaurants bars bistros the quartz theatre with free exhibitions underneath you walk past the tourist imformaton, the other side of the square , where the hotel de ville is ,there is the new multiscreen cinema. Go the other way down the hill to the port de commerce with its shops bars and restaurants, on the harbour front the fish market. Then again don't take my word for it go on Brests web page!!!!!!!!!!!

The centre of Brest is quite nice in the summer but it is very tiring as the shops are spread out quite a bit and after half an hour, well, we were all very tired. It's nice to see different shops though that are not all selling the same thing. The sandwiches and things were very expensive I found, like most cities really. One thing I found quite useful was the enormous vending machine on one of the main streets, the size of a shop window, where you could purchase things at supermarket prices, good for drinks when it was hot. Imagine that in England, it would be robbed within seconds!
