WendyG
not sure if this is right place. When I purchased my house some 10 years ago for ease I took over the previous owner's insurance but this now seems to have become so expensive . Last year they charged me just under 800 Es. Unlike in the UK I have never received a fully explanatory document of how much they are insuring the property for, they did have the contents as being £40,000 which is ridiculous as it is a holiday home, so this was redu ced to £25,00 and brought the insurance down marginally. Is it normal for there not to be an insured property figure for rebuilding etc? Should I have a policy document setting out what is an is not covered?I have insured houses in UK and have always had proper explanatory documents. It is an old rambling house with barn and outbuildings. 6 rooms plus 2 shower rooms and 1 kitchen and 1 kitchenette. have personally paid for outbuildings and barn to be re-roofed and only claim made was against EDF for electrical problem stemming from outside. PaulT
Are you insuring a huge chateau - 800 euros is a very high price - especially as you have no documentation - are you actually insured? We were insuring in France for our holiday home but the price just kept going up so we insure in the UK at a very reasonable price, do an Internet search, plus I can understand the documentation. WendyG
No not big, fairly large kitchen with utility/junk area off, small dining room, narrow boiler room, stairs up to sitting room and bedroom and shower room. Then downstairs small library, shower room off, room used as bedroom, room with stairs up to sittingroom/kitchen with small mezzanine area with 2 beds and wash basin.Barn with several small outbuildings (all of these I have had re-roofed at my expense), and a field with tin barn.I get a bill and a receipt but never a normal policy document like in the UK

We pay about 700€ a year house/content insurance but our house is a lot bigger than Wendy's holiday home and we include a gite in ours. However I did search on Google and there are quite a few UK companies that will insure homes abroad and I presume they will be cheaper. What really interested me was http://www.andrewcopeland.co.uk/gcm.htm car "green card" insurance for UK registered cars. They say they will insure a car but "The vehicle should be kept abroad for 11 months a year". I wonder if that is the reason you see a lot of UK reg. cars running around where the owners obviously live here. I have in mind a **builder** who lived next door to us for several years and never changed the registration on their cars.
NormanH
You should have full documentation with details of what is insured etc. Here is a site where you can compare various companieshttp://www.lelynx.fr/assurance-habitation.aspx
woolybanana
I am very satisfied with Mutuelle de Poitiers. Perhaps you might get a quote from them.
