Please tell us more about this "remedy" Mary ? !
Well, Christine, it's not exactly a remedy - so far as I'm aware there is no cure for sweet itch.  You probably know that sweet itch is believed to be an allergic reaction to the bite of a certain midge.  Well the midge apparently bites where it lands on the unfortunate horse, but doesn't wander across the horse's coat looking for tasty areas to nibble on.  The theory is that the Avon oil (which is just the right consistency - neither too sticky nor too thin) provides a film on the coat which the midge doesn't like landing on and it flies off somewhere else.  The horse smells quite nice too.....

We have just successfully made fly repellant using a recipe from here http://moniteausaddleclub.com/flyspray_recipes.htm , recommended by a knowledgable horseman.

Skin- so- soft obtained by ordering Avon catalogue from their website. This arrived in a couple for days and then we ordered the skin so soft by post, again quickly delivered. The citronella was in the first pharmacie we tried- either luck or it's easily available.

There may be easier ways but this worked!
