Bonfire Ban

Recommended Posts

Before the cold weather set back in and the rain started, there was a ban on bonfires in the Limousin (allegedly).

Does anyone know if this is still the case as I have a mountain of b****y brambles to burn (before the scar me for life).

I know in the Correze (19) the Gendarmes have been paying a visit to people who have had bonfires over the last few weeks to inspect them.  Apparently you shouldn't be lighting them near open fields or forest (

I'm hoping that if I drag my hosepipe out to the bonfire area, no-one will pay any attention!

Has anyone else had any problems with the gendarmes on bonfire lighting over the last few weeks?

I've got a 55 gallon oil drum, with the top taken off with a cold chisel, about 100 holes drilled and widened with a large steel spike. I begged it from a scrap yard!

I stand it on old bricks etc, and it'll burn most stuff, contains the fire and is easy to control.

It also only burns the area under it.

How do we know if there is a bonfire ban or not? The mairie said earlier this year that we could have bonfires anytime except in the summer.

We had a huge bonfire last night - lots of brambles, box, broom, ivy, etc. Nobody bothered us or has said anything (yet), and although we are set back off the road the fire was fully vivible from it. Come to think of it, it wouldn't make much difference if we were totally secluded as the entire village seem to know exactly what we are up to!

Go and read the "Annonces Municipales" board outside the Mairie.

That's where all the official notifications are put for public knowledge, so no-one can ignore the law. There will be an "Arrêté" indicating IF you can light a fire, IF you can wash you car, IF you can water your garden...and specifying under which conditions you can do so

The "Arrêté" will also indicate "from... and to..." dates, which does not mean you can start lighting (or start watering...)after the last day, but it does mean you have to ensure no other "Arrêté" has been posted extending the ban.

The "Arrêté" will vary from "commune" to "commune", so it's no use asking this forum unless the reply comes from the same "commune"...

If in doubt, ask the assistants at the Mairie: it's their job to keep you informed either in person of by phone.

Do they post the notices on the hamlets 'Mairie notice boards'  as well?  Our only seems to get very occasional notices and the actual mairie is about 11kms away from our house and I don't fancy walking that everytime I need a bonfire.  We have had bonfires all year round even in summer and on Sundays (I have scince heard this is a no-no to) and no one has mentioned anything but I would still rather not fall foul of the law!

Use your phone and call the Mairie... Ask them that very question, and find out about the bonfire regulations whilst you've got them on the line!
