trip to the Auvergne

Recommended Posts

we are organising a trip with our classic car club to the above region in August 2016. I wondered if there are any forum members who could suggest places of interest, places to eat/stay. We live in the Limousin, so are already familiar with those parts of the Auvergne that border the Creuse. We were looking to go further south towards Cantel. Any info would be helpful. many thanks

Places you might consider:

St. Etienne - prefecture with all the accoutrements you might expect

Le Puy en Velay - also prefecture but (to my mind at least) much more attractive and much less of the feel of the big city.

The Haute Loire gorge and the surrounding land of volcanoes (Sucs)

Le Chambon sur Lignon - a small town that, had it not been a centre for rescuing Jewish children in WW2, might have slipped into obscurity.

Chemin de Fer du Velay - preserved narrow gauge railway running (principally) from Tence to Chambon to St. Agreve (Ardeche and just out of your remit). It actually starts in Raucoules Brossettes, but this is such a backwater as to be hard to access.
