idun
I was just getting my tax files out and noticed my very old file for french taxes (not the oldest, no idea where that is) and decided to have a little look.In 1989 our tax fonciere was 2689ff and habitation was 1695ff, that included reductions for having two children. No idea what they were in the UK at that time, but ours did not do other than go up and up. We always paid a lot and were paying more in France than we did upon our return to the UK.The other paperwork I found was the impots sur le revenus request for an acompte provisionnel for 1985, well two of them. One received in January to be paid by the 15th of February and the other in April to be paid on the 15th of May.I have no idea why this appears to be a 'new' idea in some other regions of France. All those years we only had french tv, they would announce that people had to get their acompte paid by a certain date. We started paying monthly in 1986, so this no longer applied to us, although we did get reminders for a couple of years, with a note on the back saying that if we paid monthly to ignore it. I have noticed it states, that if the tax due was below a certain sum then it only need be paid later in the year, helas never applied to us, or is that good[Www]We now have the same system in the UK and have to make an interim payment too as we are on self assessment. idun
Couldn't help myself, once I started going through the file, had to see what else was there and found the following.Certificat de Souscription a l'Emprunt obligatoire 1983.Now that, I remember as a very unpleasant surprise. Everyone had to loan the government about £100, no idea what you did if you hadn't got it, it was not a small sum in 1983. And so we did. We got a certificate and had to hand that in to get our money back three years later. No idea what happened if one lost it, maybe no money back. We did get our money back with some interest. Could happen again in France, could it? never heard of it happening elsewhere, but maybe it has!

idun
So did Mitterand do the right thing? It is certainly the time my life diverged from my family and friends lives in the UK.
