I don't know whether many of you saw Saturday's piece in The Times: it made me chuckle.  It was just a daft article about the growth of cricket over here.  Just loved the 'official' translations of terminology:

  • fielder    chasseur
  • batsman   batteur
  • bowler   lanceur
  • four   touche indirecte
  • six   touche directe
  • stump   piquet
  • wicket maiden   vierge couronnee, ........... and my favourite
  • lbw   jdg (jambe devant guichet)

Additionally, there were some unofficial ones in the Editorial:

  • first slip   negligee
  • fine leg   jambon
  • language used to sledge opponents   crudites
  • a bye   adieu
  • Ricky Ponting   aussi
  • a couple of terrifying bouncers   decolletage

My OH is a cricket umpire and so I have tried to find the article online for him on The Times website with no success.  Could you find it or at least give me some keys words to Google it?

I found this:
