Julie Andrews (one for the ladies) and, apparently some men.

To commemorate her birthday, actress/vocalist, Julie Andrews made a special appearance at

Manhattann bsp;'s Radio City Music Hall for the benefit of the AARP.

One of the musical numbers she performed was 'My Favourite Things' from the legendary

movie 'Sound Of Music'. Here are the lyrics SHE used:

(Sing It!) - If you sing it, its especially hysterical!!!

Botox and nose drops and needles for knitting,

Walkers and handrails and new dental fittings,

Bundles of magazines tied up in string,

These are a few of my favourite things.

Cadillacs and cataracts, hearing aids and glasses,

Polident and Fixodent and false teeth in glasses,

Pacemakers, golf carts and porches with swings,

These are a few of my favourite things.

When the pipes leak, When the bones creak,

When the knees go bad,

I simply remember my favourite things,

And then I don't feel so bad.

Hot tea and crumpets and corn pads for bunions,

No spicy hot food or food cooked with onions,

Bathrobes and heating pads and hot meals they bring,

These are a few of my favourite things...

Back pain, confused brains and no need for sinnin',

Thin bones and fractures and hair that is thinnin',

And we won't mention our short shrunken frames,

When we remember our favourite thin gs.

When the joints ache, When the hips break,

When the eyes grow dim,

Then I remember the great life I've had,

And then I don't feel so bad.

(Ms. Andrews received a standing ovation from the crowd that lasted over four minutes and repeated encores.

I heard someone on the radio talking about the blitz of Coventry. Julie Andrews, a child star at the time, was unperturbed, and sheltered under a table.

Just for that I don't feel inclined to make fun of her. Sorry to be a wet blanket.

I recently read her autobiography about her early life, up to Sound of Music.  It was not an easy life, touring the variety circuits, two families, and yes, sheltering under tables during the war.    I found it fascinating, but then I always did love her voice.  I think she has faced up squarely to the loss of that beautiful voice (more than three octaves, and as a singer I can appreciate just what that means ...) and what life has thrown at her.

And yes, I've seen those lyrics before, quite recently, and on here

Sorry don;t know how to link to it.....

Anyone who knows anything about Julie Andrews will know that this story is a hoax - Julie Andrews can't sing. She had surgery on her vocal cords about 10 years ago - it was botched and left her without her singing voice.

And anyway, her 70th birthday would have been, I think, in 2004.

EDIT

I have just read Tandem Pilot's post and followed the link. The full story is there. Apart from anything else, the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organisation (and I suspect Dame Julie Andrews, who knew Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein) would not have permitted a public performance which parodied any R&H song.

There is a distinct lack of something going on here, don't you think.

Whether it was true or not it wasn't, in any way, derogatory towards Julie Andrews.

If you read the words, or even better, sing them, it is funny, nothing more.

I posted it in 'The lighter side' for a reason.

Lighten up guys.
. Whether it was true or not it wasn't, in any way, derogatory towards Julie Andrews. . .
I agree.

Having lost my (nothing like JA's but it was one of my few talents) own singing voice after 3 weeks with a breathing tube after my accident, I know how devastating it is and  I think she is a very brave lady and wouldn't ever take the rise out of her.  But if she could have sung it then I don't think it would have been insulting either to her or R&H - it's a p*ss-take of the whole process of getting old.  If we can't laugh at that, we'd just cry, wouldn't we?

I was just interested to know whether it had happened or not.

Sorry this is a bit late - but I've been out all day.

I think that I have allowed myself appear rather po-faced. It is quite funny (and it even hits home somewhat) I was merely saying that the "circumstances" attributed to its "performance" were not true and gave two reasons why it is an urban myth: (1) Julie Andrews can't sing and (2) the R&H Organisation jealously guard the R&H canon.
