Can England fare well in the World Cup ?

I believe the players are good enough but it is with Sven, that I think it

falls down. His selections and tactical awareness has all too often let the side down.

As far as squad selection is concerned, I felt there were one or two

shocks and it was hard to see why

a couple were taken and why a couple of others were not taken. My

biggest worries are quite honestly  with the goalkeepers. Robinson

looks slow and on the heavy side these days and as for  David

James, please don't let it come down to him playing.

I have had a little flutter on us, as well as the hosts and Brazil (if

Brazil win, I get my money back at best !!) I expect it to give me some

fun...............

With goalkeepers I dont think anyone comes close to Seaman. Remember that fall he had in the last tournament?  Owch!!

Sven? Who remembers his crazy substitute choices in 2002? Could be worse, we could get Hoddle back and have them all into chanting and medication nonsense. I think Glennie is only good for dancing with under age girls.

However, although they are joint second favourites I think they stand a good chance.  Imagine a finale with the Germans or the Argies, I don't think my heart could take it.

Wouldn't mind Eng-er-land Vs Germany Final, it would be a win-win situation but a real biggern if we won !!

Apart from the substitutions Katie, Sven playing Beckham in 2002 when

he was obviously  not up to it, is another one of the bug bears I

have with him.

Only a few days to go now, until K.O...................grass to cut,

strimming & weeding to be done first or after 4 weeks we could be

the only Jungle B&B in Brittany[:)]

Sven is also my biggest concern.  I wish Scolari had taken the job - to get a bit of life & flair to their game.  It was reported he wouldn't be suitable as he didn't have the same "style" as the England team.  It's what they needed!!  How many times have teams from South American/Brail won the cup since '66?  Surely it's about time the England team changed tactics, become more flowing & stop basing their game around set-plays. I honestly don't see why there had to be an English or British coach, for next season.

(also a pity that Peter Schmeichel wasn't English & a few years younger!! [;-)])
I've heard we are ranked fairly highly this time.  Any truth in that?
Absolutely.

We are rated quite highly by many good judges and it is generally

thought that this is possibly our best squad since 1966. Although for

me, I really thought the 1970 side was that little bit better and we

were really a little unlucky that year.

I think there is something seriously amiss with the Solari episode, he

knew full well, that being the England boss would bring the press to his door, so

why did he supposedly accept, then deny, then say he had decided

against taking the job, as the press invaded his privacy ?

Good man and a good choice, just that once again, the old fogeys at the

FA have let the football folk of England down again with an unproven

man at the helm and they said after Taylor (nice man, wrong chap for

the job) they would not make mistakes like that again.

We must surely try for the best man possible, whatever his

nationality. Can't see Steve Maclaren being up to the job (another

Taylor

perhaps?), he was Svens right hand man and that didn't see too much

tactical awareness, so why will he find it all now ?

The other thing I think worth mentioning, was the huge salary Sven was

on ! Why not make it a percentage of that, then make the England

manager earn more by winning games to bolster his salary ?

Smeichel's OK but what if Banks'y was just a (lot) bit younger, eh [;-)]

Finding an England manager seems to be a bit like finding a leader for the Conservative Party - plenty of nice people but not really up to the job, which just lets the nonentities in. Maybe there's a footballing David Cameron lurking out there somewhere? Despite Sven, I think England stands as good a chance as any other side, so hope we do well.
