Computer Problem.

This may not be the appropriate place but -

Can anyone say if its ok to remove a programme called 'upapp' from the pc. Its a very big programme and I think it may be slowing the unit down. We run XP Pro SP2 if thats relevant.

I googled it and came up with this:

"It stands for Upgrade App and is an automatic software updater used by various programs.You may be not require it. Find the program folder. Open it and change the .exe file to .old which will stop the program running. Leave it for a few weeks. If nothing stops working, run the uninstaller. If the program is needed, just change the file back to .exe."

I got the same google. Unfortunately the advice doesn't work, or not for me. I cant find the programme folder, going via regedit does not give an .exe file.

I would love to follow the googled advice but how?????

There is a lot of stuff on the web about that application, some suggestions that it's malicious. I'll delve a little deeper when I've got a minute.

Have you got 'SpyBot' it's a free download and worth having and running.

Hi you could try:

1. Start > Run

2. type   msconfig in the box and click OK

3. click on the far right tab Startup

4. Scroll down the list and see if Upapp appears on the list if it does click on the box to remove the tick

5. Click apply

6. A window will pop up asking if you want to restart or not. Select restart and when you are restarted go back into Msconfig to see if the Upapp program has reloaded, if it is still unticked, great if not....then we think again[geek]

Oh, forgot to say I did read somewhere that it may be to do with updates for HP products...Scanner or Printer perhaps? Spybot is good though!
