cooperlola
Do any of you techies know what the etymology of the "Pod" bit is, as in "Pod -cast/casting"?
Pierre ZFP
Comes from 'I-Pod' that is, the offering from Apple. I suppose the i-pod has become ubiquitous due to it's ease of use that anyone can actually manage to load/play songs on it. Whilst it's not bad, to my mind there are better players out there. i-river for example
cooperlola
So why did Apple call it a Pod in the first place?
Pierre ZFP
I think it was from 'Podule' meaning a small container
cooperlola
Thanks Pierre. Just one of those silly conversations with the o/h last night. He thought it was a truly daft name....!
AnOther
I think it's basically because Apple pioneered the "cast" bit and it naturally got called a "Podcast""Pod" was just a marketing name and if Apple are good at nothing else they are masters of that !At the risk of igniting a flame war, iPods, or certainly earlier ones, were an absolute triumph of style over function but the public fell in love with them and the rest is, as they say, history. At it's introduction there were technically superior products available, just as there are now, but everybody just had to have one to be seen sporting those white earphones, even if they weren't always plugged into an iPod !There is actually an anti iPod website promoting the alternatives http://www.anythingbutipod.com/Unfortunately the name iPod has become generic and synonymous with MP3 players, or should I say DAP (Digital Audio Player), and I have to admit that it does still irk me somewhat when the people on TV and in the press casually refer to everything as an iPod.........grrrrrrrrrr.
