BTW and other abbreviations

I have only just sussed that "btw" means "by the way".  I thought that it was an official term e.g. someone wrote in the healthcare section that my health card was a "EHIC btw".

Are these abbreviations just a way of confusing us?

Should there be a dictionary of them here?
