TWINKLE
Try looking here ...http://cdsweb.cern.ch/journal/article?issue=26/2007&name=CERNBulletin&category=News%20Articles&number=3&ln=enAnd yes, my first degree was in Physics ...RegardsPickles
Thanks Pickles (love your avatar) Very interesting and easy to understand - even for degreeless me! My husband calmed me down last night and said much of the same that this article does. Still, I will be feeling a bit wobbly next Wednesday. Does it say anywhere what time they will be switching the thing on so that I can make sure I'm doing something noble in the last seconds of my life as opposed to feeding the cats or cleaning out my daughters rabbit hutch?[:)]

Cat
There's to be a live webcast that starts at 9am http://indico.cern.ch/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=40120The beam itself is due to be switched on at 9:30am http://lhc-first-beam.web.cern.ch/lhc-first-beam/practical.html
Pierre ZFP
The correct expression is 'A little learning is a dangerous thing'Don't you think that the LHC might have been turned on already? I can't imagine anyone waiting for the media circus to turn up for the thing to fail when the 'on' button is pushed. Although the energies in this thing are huge they are nothing compared to what happens in the sun every second.http://newsbiscuit.com/article/large-hadron-collider-may-destroy-universe-say-stupid-people-
Patf
I know this "machine" makes things a bit different, but the end of the world has been predicted hundreds of times:http://www.bible.ca/pre-date-setters.htmI think it was during the 1666 one I read that people were so convinced it would happen that they wouldn't bother to have repairs etc done to their houses as they wouldn't be here anyway. cowoman
Sorry didn't mean to scare anyone!!!My son just came home from his physics lesson and his teacher told him that for his homework he should read up or listen to the news on the subject. So we did. Iceni
Typical teacher - the world may be about to end so set some homework on it. If it happens your son will not have his work marked and if it doesn't, another evening wasted.John
