woolybanana
..... it would be such a powerful reminder of values now lost. I hope it has not gone abroad though, that would be the ultimate insult.http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1221983/Only-surviving-Union-Jack-Battle-Trafalgar-sells-record-breaking-384-000.html
Mr Coeur de Lion
Last year, in some places in the UK, it would have cost about £384,000 just to have a wall! That should be in a museum. Imperial War Museum would be a good place.
buelligan
...or perhaps the National Maritime Musuem at Greenwich. Interesting choice of title for this thread WoolyB! Hopefully we will think too about those that died unsung so that some daft bugger with too much money could hang it on their wall....[I]

Clarkkent
I wasn't listening properly, but I think that I heard on R4 news that the flag has been owned by a family in Australia. It was returned to Britain for sale and that the new American owner is looking to it remaining in England. But next time I shall listen more attentively .... Edward Trunk
Britain is full of entrepreneurs, Wooly B. They are called bankers, and they have recently reduced the country to bankruptcy.

just john
Perhaps you'd like to translate “blown away” the owners comment on the eventual sale price. Incidentally the original owner was a press-ganged hero James Clephan, from Fife in Scotland, began life as a weaver, but was press-ganged aged 26, one of only 16 men in naval history to have risen so high after being press-ganged. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article6884574.ece
