Small Island

For those of you with BBC TV reception there's a new serial starting this evening of the book Small Island by Andrea Levy. Not sure of the time.

I read the book recently and loved it - interesting and funny.

It's about the immigrants from Jamaica to the UK post WW2.

I listened to the story on CDs and am looking forward to seeing the TV version tonight.

 Its one of my favorite books, but I'm a little apprehensive, I just hope the BBC do it justice.

After all it's not a serial but a 2 parter - second part this evening.

I thought it was well done and the acting was good. Pretty true to the book dialogue, but I would have liked them to make more of the scene inside the cinema  (instead of having it outside) which I thought was one of the best parts of the book. Also Gilbert's trip to the American base.

It's interesting how, when you read a book, you visualise the characters and situations, and they are never as good when converted to a play or film.

I would agree with your comments Patf.

Having listened to the story on CD I found that Bernard spoke slightly more "posh" in the TV version. I think it is well cast and I too am looking forward to the second part tonight.

Goes for radio too, Pat.  The pictures "in your head" are always the best!
