Iceni
Either way he seems to have shown poor judgement in making his personal but not official statement and drawing attention to something of which most people were previously unaware. Is removal of one's common sense a pre-requisite before becoming a Minister ?A. Liberal (but not necessarily liberal)
woolybanana
His attempted outing is part of a deliberate ploy by gay opposition people to embarrass the government, maybe even P Mandelson knows something about it. The hotel clerk who dropped a hint to the press should be tried for something or other.[6]
Chancer
I love the title Iceni [:D]My immediate rection was that I had always had him down as a shirt***** but I didnt think I would get away with saying that on a forum, but after your title...........................[Www]Actually the story, that that I know of it sounds exactly like the plot of an Edwina Currie novel that I have just read, her of course being robustly and delightfully hetero [;-)]

So I must conclude the veiled word started with a 't'.I still won't vote.
Hoddy
I don't see any problem. It used to be commonplace for men to share rooms and even beds without any conclusions of this kind being drawn. Eric and Ernie frequently appeared in bed together.Hoddy

Anton Redman II
The idea that anybody from Yorkshire would pay for another room for a colleague when there was space and separate bed in his room demonstrates just how deep the North South divide is

Hoddy
The more I think about this story the nastier I think it is. Taken to its logical conclusion it would mean that no heterosexual could have a close working relationship or friendship with a homosexual without it being suspect. What a sorry state of affairs.Hague's mistake was to comment on the story at all. He should have ignored it with all the contempt it deserves.Hoddy
Iceni
Hague's mistake was to comment on the story at all.
For me this is the most worrying aspect of the sordid matter. As Foreign Secretary he should display more sense, perhaps the Americans who normally tell our Ministers what to think and do are all back-packing in the Mojave desert. Who knows, the next time the story might be something really important.John
woolybanana
The problem surely was that he was being questioned about this during news conferences about foreign affairs, was it not whilst in germany on the last occasion? I think he may have done the right think ultimately though it is a sad day when it had to happen. But it shows the sick nature of some opposition political interest or other.
