Salty Sam
A geophysicist with The U.S. Geological Survey reported one GPS station moved 8 feet, and together with satellite measurements from the Geospatial Information Authority, the indication is the pattern of shift over a large area is consistent with about that much shift of the land mass.Reports from the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Italy estimated the 8.9-magnitude quake shifted the planet on its axis by nearly 4 inches!Much the same info as in the link, but it would appear to be a shift of the land mass.S'pose one could dig out the theodolites and check if the TomTom things are in fact accurate! pachapapa
Good investigative research; can you flesh that out a bit by indicating the direction of the coastal displacement.

All the technical details are available here:http://www.gfz-potsdam.de/portal/gfz/Public+Relations/Pressemitteilungen/aktuell/110316_Erdbebenablauf and,http://www.gfz-potsdam.de/portal/gfz/Public+Relations/M40-Bildarchiv/001_+Japan/110315_slipDetails of the axis shift:http://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/japanquake/earth20110314.htmlbut of course this may just be a coincidental event marking the forthcoming arrival in December 2012, of Nibiru otherwise known as 'Planet X'. (Well so the purveyors of doom would have us believe!)
Useful couple of links with just the information I was seeking giving an estimate of the vectors for the displacement along the tectonic plate subduction zone.Berechnungen der GFZ-Modellierungsgruppe um Stephan Sobolev ergaben sogar bis zu 27 Metern Versatz und eine Vertikalbewegung von sieben Metern.Bit busy today but will check the report more fully whilst watching the two rugby matches later.
