Frederick
It appears farmers were selling sacks of potatoes knowing they were being used to make vodka by immigrants . And locals knew an illegal still was in the industrial unit . Today will they wish they had reported it ....? five families would not be grieving now if they had http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/top-stories/2011/07/13/boston-industrial-estate-explosion-kills-5-115875-23269424/
mint
How horrifying.....to die in that way!In the UK, I suppose we do have a culture of minding our own business and turning a blind eye to things that we don't like.
powerdesal
Nothing in the linked report says that local farmers were selling potatoes knowing they were being used for a vodka still. The report says the explosion happened quickly, is there such a thing as a 'slow' explosion ????? Gardengirl
Someone was interviewed on R4 this morning about this, and said his father and other local farmers sold them and knew what they were being used for!
idun
It isn't as if potatoes are not easily available in Lincolnshire, maybe lincolns, so the farmers selling them is IMO of little concern in this story. Were these people child labour, doubt it, so idiots blew themselves up, daresay it isn't the first and won't be the last time fools try and build and use a still and it blows up. Bit of a non story, well that is how I see it. I'm just glad that no one else was injured.

AnOther
I think that was a foregone conclusion as soon as the words 'vodka still' were introduced [blink]
Edward Trunk
To buy a pack of aspirins in Britain you have to have a certificate from five archbishops, and then undergo the Spanish Inquisition. I hope you're not suggesting the same procedure be adopted for selling potatoes.
idun
Can you imagine, 'you want some potatoes?' 'are you taking any other vegetables' frown 'fruit' ........ then 'any ID 'then 'utility bill'. Hope food never gets scarce, or who knows.
