Gardengirl
The British Heart Foundation is now recommending a hands only approach to CPR, after finding that people are put off helping due to feeling they can't do it or by the thought of the kiss of life. They are hoping this method will bring improved results. They have a very good advert for this hands only approach, using Vinnie Jones in a gangster-type routine, which is attention-grabbing and may have good results:http://www.bhf.org.uk/heart-health/life-saving-skills/hands-only-cpr.aspx?gclid=CPT3k8GBwa0CFUVTfAod_06DAw

Frederick
A good message to get over...... I carry one of these car key rings that was given to me a couple of years ago..... A good thing for companies to distribute with their logo on I would think... Then people could do the job better . http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mouth-Protection-Resuscitation-Shield-Keyring/dp/B005OSLDQS/ref=pd_sxp_f_pt/279-0661356-4074867
JSKS
Anyone who's tried artificial respiration will attest to how difficult it is to inflate the lungs. In a crisis, trying to ensure a patent airway and create a seal is really hard (in the case of severe facial injury [my field] or vomiting [very common] usually impossible). This new approach - compressions only - was being considered just before I retired 4 years ago for emergency use. Even an experienced anaesthetist would have a problem with m-to-m in the street. On the other hand, compressions are straightforward (if rather tiring) and one would hope that the emergency services weren't too far away!
