Another hue and cry about soldiers training and selection

I remember in 1982 there was a set of about 12 programmes about the training of recruits to the Parachute Regiment and it was lambasted by various papers as being too harsh and questioned what was the need. Well, the 12 programmes never concluded because the recruits, who were near the end of their training, were sent to the Falklands as the war had started.

For those who do not remember, the regiment yomped for 40 miles over extremely difficult terrain, fighting battles as they went and greatly helped retake Port Stanley and the surrender of the Argentinian force.

What for me it showed was that the training was not excessive. Indeed in the conflict the SAS were very much involved in some very hazardous operations.

Now, the hue and cry because three TA members died in the selection process to become SAS where temps were 30 degrees and now another soldier had died on an exercise and the report notes that it was 17 degrees and a slight breeze:

Soon, in a battle we will have the opposing generals completing risk assessments and deciding that someone may get hurt so cancel the battle. It also means that hot places will be out of the question and presumably cold places.
