shutting down the computer

Can someone please tell me how I can shut down the computer using only the keyboard?

I am using W10.  I usually do it on screen but now the windows key is not doing anything, therefore no shut down menu.

So now, what do I have to do?

Thank you[:)]

PS Have tried googling but can't understand the instructions and have also now lost the sound so can't watch a video to explain it to me!

Try holding down the on button, wherever it is, for a count of 7 or 8 secs and your comp should close down.

It is called a forced stop and won't do any damage but your comp might whinge a lot when you start it up again.

Hit the start button and type power. (Do not select power in the start menu). Then select 'power options'. From there select 'choose what the power button does'. Here you can set a proper power down. From then on just hit the power button (do not hold!) to close down.

Many thanks, everybody.

PeterG, yes, I did get a box asking me if I wanted to "fermer" but then after a while it says there is a problem but still not shut down.

Kong, I am not sure I understand your instructions[:-))]  Not your instructions but more my understanding of them!

Yes, Sue, I assassinated it in the end, held the power button down until it squeaked!  Result!

But thank you again all.

Powering down is never a good way to close down a PC and I would never recommend it unless there were no other option.

It sounds like you have some problems with your PC though and it's always better to fix those  than find kludges to work around them.

A simple first step is to run the system file checker.

Using the search type in CMD then on Command Prompt which should appear right click and Run as Administrator

In the window which pops up type sfc /scannow then press enter.

Let it do it's thing then restart and see if it has fixed the problem.

I have been using a great little bit of software over the years to keep the PC's running smoothly as you don't need to be tech savy to use it. It's around $14-19 US dollars per year although the first year purchase maybe a bit more there are always deals on the net so very little in € and does a great job.

Thank you very much, Erns and Teapot.  I have noted down everything you say.  At the mo, the shutdown on screen is working fine.

I am due to get a new printer in the New Year and I will get a wifi one which should leave room on my computer desk for some speakers.  Norman has been nagging me to get some speakers for years so that will be my slightly belated Christmas treat.

Don't know where I'll put the printer yet but at least it will not be taking up space on my desk, hurray!
