I'm sure I have seen bigger last year, last night the moon didn't look that different to normal and was rather disappointing.

In fact last year, or was it earlier this year,  it looked 'huge' and beautiful and it really looked like it was hanging at the end of our road,

Ah well.

It was huge and extremely bright in our area of the Gard, larger and brighter than I've ever seen in the past.

I read that those who saw it when it was high up in the sky had no reference points and therefore it didn't look larger than normal, maybe that was so in your case, Idun. Those who saw it nearer the horizon were more likely to have trees/buildings nearby, which showed the proportions of the large moon better.

I agree with you jazzer, it was earlier this year when it looked huge.

As it was, it was over the sea this time, but did not look exceptional apart from the colour which was rather 'yellow'.

Looked out during the night ofcourse it was high in the sky by then, and looked pretty normal really and bright as ever for a full moon.

Yes, Idun, we both thought it was not that big, but we can't see the horizon (and it was cloudy at dusk) but then the skies cleared completely and the moon shone brightly all night.  And yes, in the bathroom (where we have a velux) it was almost bright enough to read and see by, and I know that it never really got dark as our curtains do let the light through and it was a bit like midsummer in Oslo in June!!

But we only ever saw it once it was well above the horizon with no points of reference.

It looks larger for the same reason tht the sun does when it's near the horizon.

When you look up at either you are looking through the depth of the atmosphere and that is realitivly shallow compaired to when you see either near the horizon, because when you are looking towards that horizon you are looking along the atmosphere and therefore much more of it. That magnifies the object and it looks bigger. Good ere init [B]

Anyway, it ain't the size that matters, it's what you do with it [8-)]

There was a 'supermoon' back in March this year.  It gave the Indonesians a total eclipse.

Well at least you lot saw something ? it was too cloudy here so I saw nothing. Very disappointed as when I realised how old I could be for the next one, oh it doesn't bear thinking about.

I hope to see the next one in December, although it's not as likely to be quite so big.
