patriots and nationalists

I am a bit amused about how politicians use these words.

Macron, in his "victory" speech yesterday made a distinction between patriots and nationalists, saying, naturally, that he wants to work for both.

Le Pen talked about "sincere patriots"..........so they come in 2 types, the sincere ones and, by implication, the false ones?

May says that if you don't vote Conservative, you are not a patriot.

I guess that patriotism retains human values whilst nationalism does not.

I thought that he said that he wanted to be president of everyone in France, the patriotes faced with the threat of nationalistes (Marine's lot)?
