goose
Hi SweetSorry I didn't answer your question about the barley straw yesterday, I have only just seen it. but as Thebiga has said it does need to be barley straw, When barley straw is put into water, it starts to decompose and during this process chemicals are released which inhibit the growth of algae.Your pond sounds about the same size as ours, maybe if there aren't any already you could plant some trees around it to create some shade algae thrives in the sunshine, waterlilies will also help by covering the surface of the water and look lovely at the same time. I hope your plans work out for you good luck.
Gardengirl
In UK lot of garden centres which have good pond sections stock those barley 'bricks', and I've been told by a number of people that they work well. Many ponds don't mean hard work, and there's great enjoyment to be had from the wildlife. I love the sound of Virginia Water in your area! Good luck, Sweet! [:)]
