Stupid hoaxes - or just stupid people?

On the BBC "Flog it" programme, I have just seen the upteenth Bible or Prayer Book in a cigarette tin, with a bullet embedded in it, which reputedly saved the life of the soldier who had it in his breast pocket.

My mother had one of these, which she said saved the life of her Uncle Fred during WW1.

I simply don't believe these stories; I reckon bored squaddies fired at tins set up in the trenches, with an extra layer of something in between, and sold them.
