I have switched off Norton and also the pop up blocker is off and I still have no control panel.

Surely you shouldn't have to fiddle like this to access this forum. I don't do this on other forums

Also the names of people posting still does not appear automatically. It just says forum newbie or whatever

Page has been refreshed - still doesn't work properly.

I can usually fix most things on my computer but this has got me beat, and it is so frustrating!

I've got all the smilies and text editing tools for messages which other people say they have not got.

Are the people who put this software together looking at these problems?

Sorry to hear you are having problems.

James (Forum Admin) is currently trawling through a large pile of e-mails from people who need new passwords to get in. We are all finding our way through the software - one of the problems seem to be that there is no user manual, either printed or on-line, and the only way to get answers to these problems seems to be by posting on the developers' support forum. I'm amazed at how many bugs there seem to be in what is supposedly properly-released software.

If you want to look at the support forum yourselves, you should be able to find it at http://support.instantasp.co.uk/ - I don't think you can ask questions there unless you have actually bought a copy of the software, but the answers may just give some clues to those more computer-literate than me.

For what it's worth I am using Norton Anti-Virus (2002 - I think the later versions are more troublesome) and have pop-up stoppers on the Google and Tiscali toolbars, both of which are turned on, and it works more or less OK for me.

James is probably up to his ears and is also in the office early as far as I can see to deal with everything.

I was one of those locked out and was able to get back in with his help, I did not have to re-register which was great.

I have to say that there are always teething troubles with upgrades such as this (says she who is about to do the same with her support group).  This is a freebie for us and as such we have to realise that LF are doing what many members asked them to do and that even if James is doing nothing else but this upgrade there is only so much he can do in one day.

I would like to know what version of windows people are using if they are having problems.

When I posted the original qustion I was using my laptop with windows XP and I still have no control panel to access.

I work on my website on a PC using windows 98 and just happened to check if that produced the same problems - whoopee! that works and shows the control panel etc.

So is there a compatability problem with some versions of windows?

I use XP and don't have the horrendous problems that many people are reporting (though do get some of them). Reading between the lines of messages I have seen from the forum developers, it seem that the forum relies a lot on Javascript, which in my opinion is not one of the areas where XP scores over other other versions of Windows. I'm sure I heard somewhere that XP does not in fact include a Java client, you have to download one from elsewhere in order to use websites with Javascript - I'm sure if I'm wrong the IT experts will correct this. The fact that people could be using so many different Java clients might have a bearing on the problems, which all seem to be connected with 'script errors'.

Interestingly Chris (Quillan) says that he has no problems and he has installed XP SP2, so maybe that improves the way XP handles scripts?

I'll have to try our laptop with Windows ME to see what this forum looks like there.

I've got the Control Panel, no emoticons and can't change my text, Mac OS 9.2.

I've also got problems with changing my avatar, keeps telling me it's the wrong type of file, but it's a jpg! Strange thing is it told me this before for my current avatar but then it appeared a few days later!! I'm only trying to change it to a clearer version of that pic. cos it looks cr*p

oh well I'll do anything to avoid packing boxes ...

I know what you are saying about javascript but the thing is I don't have any problems with any other websites or forums and that is what is so annoying.

When I used the PC as opposed to the laptop I did not do anything, no switching of Norton etc. It just worked! I had a look through the help on the instantforums web link but could not see any thing that would help, so I shall just have to use the PC if I want to alter anything.

Jill3 - I quite agree, it's not satisfactory. This forum sofware has reached version 3.4 so I for one would have expected the developers to have these quite fundamental difficulties sorted out by now. We have a forum on our own site, which works fine (although interestingly one or two people with old or obscure browsers have reported difficulty with a javascript menu, not actually part of the forum software), and other forums I have been involved with as a user or on the admin team have not suffered the same difficulties.

I used our old laptop with Windows ME for a session on this forum yesterday, and got exactly the same problems that Gay and others are experiencing, so I don't think it's just down to Windows XP. Oddly, the forum seemed faster - maybe because it wasn't dealing with the scripts, but more likely because I got a particularly fast connection, which is not always possible over the rural French phone lines.

James (Forum Admin) is away at present but he is talking to the developers and Archant's IT people about these issues so we hope to have answers soon.
